Dermane - Excalon's IT Apprentice

We’re extremely proud of the achievements of all of our apprentices at Excalon and here's just one success story!

Dermane Reilly - Intermediate Level Apprenticeship in IT, Software, Web and Telecoms - Manchester College

Why did you choose an apprenticeship?
For the opportunity to learn new skills on the job as well as gaining qualifications at college, which also gives me an experience of the working environment.

Why did you select Manchester College?
I looked at a number of colleges and read some very positive reviews, so I booked an appointment and sat down with a tutor who explained the progress I would make throughout the course and my future career

Why IT?
IT has a wide variety of different challenges for me, as technology is constantly progressing so there will always be something new for me to learn along the way. Generally I have always had a keen interest in technology, repairing gadgets and appliances, which lead me to pursue a career in this IT

Why Excalon?
From the interview I could see this was an opportunity to join a successful growing company
What duties do you carry out?
I work on the first line of the service desk responding to all queries and problems raised by staff. I also induct new employees, configure and build computers and set up mobile phones/tablets. I'm also involved in projects such as our Office 365 migration, the Microsoft Dynamics ERP system and Unity our workforce management solution.
Do you have a mentor? And how has that helped?
The whole team are mentors to me as I learn different aspects of IT from each member.
How long have you been an apprentice and do you think you have progressed?
2 years, and in that time I have gained confidence in troubleshooting and problem solving as well as the technical knowledge.
What skills/qualifications have you achieved?
I'm currently working towards the Cisco Vertified Entry technician qualification and have already acheived the MTA in networking & security.
Do you think the apprenticeship has helped prepare you for a full time IT Role?
Yes in my role on the IT Service desk I get to meet customers and assist them by resolving their technology problems.
What are your future plans, if any, for further education / continued professional development when your apprenticeship comes to an end?
Continue working towards IT qualifications in college full or part- time, focusing on virtualisation in particular servers
Would you recommend an apprenticeship?

What does Excalon say?

Apprenticeships are a great way to get qualifications whilst getting experience doing the job, and it is easy to recognise the obvious benefits of work and study together.

Over the past 2 years we have seen Dermane not only gain IT skills but develop as a person and he is now a key member of the team being well liked by everyone in Excalon.

It will be good to celebrate the completion of his course in the very near future, and he'll be a great role model for our next IT Apprentice.
